Physician associates to access £20k ‘golden hello’ scheme

Partnership contract sign

Physician associates have been added to the list of health care professionals eligible for the £20,000 ‘new to partnership’ scheme.

NHS England said physicians associates can now apply to the scheme, which offers an incentive payment of up to £20,000 to new partners over their first five years of joining a partnership.

The scheme also provides up to £3,000 for training to support healthcare professionals to make the transition into a partnership role.

Up to now it has been open to GPs and other clinicians including pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, nurses (including ANPs), physiotherapists, paramedics, midwives, dietitians, podiatrists, occupational therapists and mental health practitioners.

NHS England previously pledged that practice managers will also be included but as yet there is no confirmation of when they will be able to apply.  Organisations representing practice managers previously called for them to be included ‘immediately’.

NHS England announced the inclusion of physicians associates in an email bulletin to practices.

It explained that applying to the scheme is now undertaken via an online portal, which allows applicants to upload the necessary supporting documents.

More information and the full list of eligibility criteria is available on the FutureNHS GP Career Support Hub.
